On Friday, May 20, 2011 RunVermont announced that pending Mother Nature's cooperation over the next week, the 2011 KeyBank Vermont City Marathon course will remain identical to the open originally planned for the vent, prior to the recent flooding of in Burlington.
As reported in the Burlington Free Press:
Organizers of the May 29 Vermont City Marathon say it looks like only a minor change will be needed to the course in response to record-breaking flooding along Lake Champlain -- provided flooding doesn't worsen between now and race day. The race will detour around the Burlington wastewater treatment plant near Perkins Pier, with runners passing instead through the Vermont Railway lot, marathon communications director Leandre Waldo-Johnson said Wednesday. She said marathon crews are working with the city's Public Works and Parks and Recreation departments to make repairs elsewhere on the Burlington bike path where flooding has occurred. Organizers had thought more extensive rerouting might be necessary, but Waldo-Johnson said based on current conditions those areas should be ready for the race. "As long as Mother Nature cooperates," Waldo-Johnson said.
