Wow, running in the Marathon isn't cheap. Where does all the money go? RunVermont is a registered 501(c)3, not for profit organization, which means we're not in this business to make money. Nearly all of your entry fee goes towards producing the Marathon. While the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon enjoys tremendous support from many sponsors, sponsorship income does not cover the cost of race production. Expenses beyond the scope of sponsorship include all the elements that each runner actually touches, items like your shirt, bibs, timing services, race bags, cups, food, medals and so on. Additionally, we expend significant funds to provide a safe event, in terms of both course safety and emergency medical services. It takes close to 100 police officers to provide traffic and pedestrian safety all along the course. The course also requires miles of fencing, cones, sawhorses and other supplies. And one of the more important elements of the event… port-o-lets.
As the largest one day sporting event in Vermont, we often have to go outside the state to acquire the level of support required for the race. Course barricades come from out of state as do many other supplies in the quantities we need to support all the runners. We also spend a significant amount of money for tents and venue rentals, permitting fees and printing collateral materials (like your Runner's and Spectator's Guide with course maps) and training materials and shirts for the volunteers. And did we mention port-o-lets?
Other significant expenses include event marketing costs and staff compensation. RunVermont is a year-round organization offering programs and services in addition to the marathon. Most of these other programs and events are self-sustaining. The one RunVermont offering that is not self-sustaining are the Youth programs. Consistent with the mission of RunVermont, any and all proceeds that are recognized from the marathon support the presentation of RunVermont’s youth running programs including Ready, Set, Run!, the YAM Scramand the Junior Youth Relay.
I am a Relay Team Captain and want to sell my team. I am in search of a Relay Team to buy! If you are interested in selling your team’s bib, finding additional runners, or want to buy a team bib, please post your message on our Relay Team Transfer Board. Please note: All transactions are private between runners; the marathon staff is unable to assist with the completion of a transfer. For team transfer sales, we ask that all transfers take place for no more than the face value: $145 for a 2-Person Relay and $195 for a 5-Person Relay plus the ChronoTrack processing fee. All relay transfers must be submitted online by May 9, 2014.
I sold my team to someone else, now what? I bought a team from someone, now what? Visit the Relay Team Registration Page for detailed information on how to change team captains. All relay transfers must be submitted online by May 9, 2014.There is no fee for team changes through May 9, 2014. After May 9, 2014 ALL team changes must be made at Race Packet Pick-Up at the EXPO on Friday or Saturday, May 23 & 24, 2014. A $10 late-change fee will apply; proceeds from this fee will be donated to the Friends of the Island Line Trail "Bikepath Rehabilitation Fund".
Can someone pick up my race packet for me at the EXPO? Each relay team must designate ONE registered team member to pick up the Bibs/ChronoTrack B-Tags, race packet, and t-shirts for the entire team. Photo ID is required, NO exceptions.
I cannot attend race packet pick-up on either Friday or Saturday. Can I pick up my packet on Sunday? Yes. Packet pick-up is available at the RunVermont offices, One Main Street, Suite 304 in Burlington (2 blocks to the Start) from 5:30-7:00 a.m. Pick-up will close at 7:00 a.m. SHARP, and packets will NOT be available at the Start.
Why are shirt sizes not guaranteed? Despite our efforts to correctly estimate the number of shirts we will need in each size, we are not able to guarantee shirt sizes; shirts are ordered from the supplier months in advance of the race, long before final registration numbers are available. Shirts are available on a first-come, first-served basis at packet pick-up. Come early to ensure you receive the size for which you registered.
What hotels do you recommend? Which hotels have shuttle service to the race? Please check our Lodging page for a list of hotels in the area. This list includes information about room rates, minimum stay, distance from the Start and shuttle buses.
Can non-runners use the hotel shuttles to the start? The shuttles are reserved for runners – if there is room before the shuttle leaves, then family and friends may take it. However, please keep in mind that runners with race bibs are given priority.
I am staying at a hotel that does not have a shuttle. Where can I park for the Marathon? There are several parking garages in downtown Burlington, as shown on this map. Please do not park in Church parking lots or at Waterfront Park.
I'm running the 2 person relay. Can one person run a little longer and exchange later in the course because the second runner can't run the full 13 miles? In order for our course judges to be sure that teams in the 2-Person Relay only have 2 runners we require all 2-Person teams to exchange at the halfway point at Oakledge Park. If we were to allow exchanges outside that zone we would have no way to be sure a 2-Person team does not have 3 or more runners. From a competition standpoint that would not be fair. Any teams in the 2 Person or 3-5 Person relays seen making an exchange outside the designated exchange zones for their event are subject to disqualification. An alternative is to swap teams with a 3-5 Person team. It is permissible to have only 2 runners on a 3-5 Person team. If you do that, the first runner would run 15.2 miles and the second runner would run 11.0 miles. (Or you could split it up 20.6 and 5.6). I have a 3-5 person team but we only have two runners. Can we exchange at the 2-person exchange zone? 3-5 Person teams are not permitted to use the 2-Person Relay Exchange Zone at Oakledge Park. If you have a 3-5 Person Relay Team, only have 2 runners, and each runner wishes to run 13.1 miles, we are sorry that we cannot accommodate you. 3-5 Person Relay Teams must exchange only in the 3-5 Person Relay Exchange Zones. If one runner is willing to run more than 13.1 miles and one a little less, you can exchange in the a 3-5 Person Relay Exchange Zones. Every year dozens of runners would like to run in the relay but do not have a team. If you have a 3-5 Person Relay team and need runners, go to our Message Board to find a teammate and make someone’s day!” I want to run on more than one relay team, is this allowed, and if so, what do I need to know? I want to run on 1+ relay team AND run the whole Marathon, too. What do I need to know? You are welcome to run on more than one relay team. Runners can also run on 1 or more relay team(s) AND run the entire Marathon. Please read our Relay Team/Marathoner Scenario Info Sheet for everything you need to know about which bibs to wear and where to exchange. Is the KBVCM a Boston qualifier? Yes. We send our results directly to BAA.
Are headphones allowed? We strongly discourage the use of headphones. If you must wear them, please wear ones that allow you to hear your surroundings. Please note that use of headphones is not allowed for competitors competing for prize money and RRCA/USATF awards. If you choose to wear headphones and finish in a money-winning place, you may be subject to forfeiture of prize money and RRCA/USATF awards.
Does KBVCM offer designated “pacer groups”? Yes, KBVCM offers pace groups. We will have additional, specific information about our pace leaders closer to the race. For the most up-to-date information, visit the Pace Teams section of the Runner Services page.
Can I sign up to be a pacer? If you are an experienced runner and would like to lead a team of runners who are trying to hit a certain time goal between 3:15-5:30, please contact Joe Connelly and asked to be placed on the pacer list; there are limited pace leader opportunities available.
